Toronto's Paul Hayden Desser has been making noirish, mellow folk music since 1996 (when Neil Young declared himself a fan). Shunning the spotlight, the deep-voiced singer-songwriter releases albums only every few years, the latest of which is Us Alone—you can expect to hear from that new disc, as well as quiet, sad and often surprisingly sexy cuts from his back catalog. Other goodies on this Billyburg bill come from fellow Canuck Doug Paisley, whose mellow, ’70s-rockin' album Constant Companion features Leslie Feist and Garth Hudson; plus Brooklyn transplant Frances Cone, who comes from Charleston, SC, and offers sweet, breathy song craft likely to appeal to fans of Kimbra and Neko Case.
