Ictus records, an Italian label that specialized in improvised music, new jazz and contemporary classical in the '70s and '80s, is in charge of the East Village sound lab this week. Tonight, they present a two-part homage to ethnomusicologist and composer Colin McPhee, who instigated a widespread fascination with the Indonesian gamelan amongst the avant-garde. During the early set, pianist Vicky Chow, clarinetist Evan Ziporyn and gamelan specialist Christine Southworth perform traditional gamelan music as well as some of McPhee's takes on it. Ictus's founder, Andrea Centazzo, takes over at 10pm for a multimedia concert featuring percussion, keyboards and mandala-inspired visuals.
