The venerable jazz label Impulse! has been termed "the house that Trane built," but the roster extended well beyond John Coltrane and the energy-jazz coterie around him. One of the best things about Impulse! Nights, a weeklong celebration of the label's 50th anniversary, is the attention being paid to some of its other classic LPs. Case in point: Tonight, trumpeter Roy Hargrove revisits Oliver Nelson's essential postbop session Blues and the Abstract Truth, with a brilliant combo featuring saxophonist David Sanchez and pianist George Cables.
