When Sonny Rollins issued his epochal live recordings from the Village Vanguard, he appeared in a trio with just bass and drums. J.D. Allen followed that daunting example in his own auspicious 2009 Vanguard debut run; no wonder his strong new Sunnyside album is titled Victory!
