The ten-piece Positive Catastrophe pools the resources of the ever-searching avant-jazz cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum, and Abraham Gomez-Delgado, head of the eclectic alterna-Latino outfit Zemog El Gallo Bueno. The resulting collision is far from a catastrophe: Full of swagger and groove, it combines Mingusesque polyphonic momentum with vibrantly off-kilter world-funk. Also on the bill is masterful percussionist Jim Pugliese, steering a large ensemble through his knotty, playful avant-jazz tunes.
