Jonathan Finlayson Trio + Liberty Ellman Quintet

Each of tonight's bandleaders is probably best known in his role as a vital sideman—trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson plays a brash foil to Steve Coleman, while Liberty Ellman's guitar provides a supportive trellis for Henry Threadgill's viney sax and flute lines—but both are also striking composers and bandleaders. Each comes to the Stone with a superlative pianist: David Virelles with Finlayson and Vijay Iyer with Ellman.
