Kassa Overall

Overall is a Renaissance man: part chopsy, super-funky jazz drummer, part beatmaking producer and a more than capable MC to boot. His latest release, Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz, combines the artist's various talents to construct a modern vision of jazz and hip-hop that's both lighthearted (see the title) and profound (the song "Prison and Phamaceuticals"). As part of his Time Capsule project, Overall plays with a series of collaborators—such as pianist Jason Moran on Jan 18—at the Jazz Gallery airing original improvisations and standards while recording the proceedings. At the residency's final dates on June 21 and 22, he'll be sonically manipulating the recorded material to create yet more new work.
