A pair of rising young singers—soprano Nino Machaidze as sprightly army brat Marie and tenor Lawrence Brownlee as her high-C-serenading boyfriend Tonio—inhabit Laurent Pelly's rendition of the Donizetti charmer. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa tries in vain to keep the youngsters in line as the Duchess of Krakenthorp, and Canadian maestro Yves Abel conducts.
