Toubab Krewe plays twangy, griot-ified surf funk, and hosts tonight's benefit show for Mali, the West African country (and international music hub) that's in a state of crisis as a result of Islamic extremism. Tonight's lineup features balafon virtuoso Balla Kouyate, who has played with Angelique Kidjo, plus Deep Sahara guitarist Abdoulaye Alhassane Toure, and saxist-clarinetist Oran Etkin with his fusion of jazz and African music. Benyoro mixes traditional motifs with funksome flavors—the name translates from Bambara as "meeting place," and the band's members hail from Mali, Martinique and Wisconsin. And finally, there's author Banning Eyre, a fine guitarist who’s more than held his own in the presence of folks like Bonnie Raitt.
