Hats off to Alan Gilbert for an elegantly constructed, deeply enticing program with a first-rate guest. The concert opens with Beethoven's too-seldom encountered Symphony No. 8 and closes with a work still more rare, Nielsen's Symphony No. 2 ("The Four Temperaments"). In between, exciting Finnish soprano Karita Mattila is featured in Beethoven's Ah, perfido! and songs by Sibelius.
