Time Out says
The NY Phil marks the holiday with two huge works in the massive St. John the Divine. The overture to Beethoven's 1810 Egmont (written after the Goethe play of the same name) bears some of the marks of his famed Fifth Symphony, completed two years earlier. Shostakovich said his Symphony No. 10 was written in response to Stalin's death in 1952 and works its way from tragedy to triumph.
