Nikka Costa was 2001’s can’t-miss star; then, she missed. Her most recent record, Pebble to a Pearl (on the reinvigorated Stax label), has some funky players, including vets of Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu and Al Green, and a disc titled PRO*WHOA! is due this year.
