As widespread promotional ideas go, Cassette Store Day was a bit of a nonstarter, sparking cynical response from cassette-culture die-hards unwilling to have their work appropriated by come-lately major-label indie-rockers. But the analog atavists participating in this Silent Barn extravaganza—labels like Mirror Universe, Orange Milk and Tranquility Tapes; acts including electrodub seducers Imperial Topaz and the gamelan-fueled Trabajo—are pure of heart and great listening besides. Expect to take home a sackful of new plastic sound vessels.
