Paul Motian has been revered for his deft drumming since back before his career-making run here in the 1960s with pianist Bill Evans, but it's only been relatively recently that he has started to achieve the renown he warrants as a composer. This heavy septet with saxophonists Bill McHenry and Chris Cheek, guitarist Steve Cardenas, violist Mat Maneri, pianist Jacob Sacks and acoustic bass-guitarist Jerome Harris affords Motian an especially rich palette.
