Matador signee Perfume Genius (real name: Mike Hadreas) plays fractured, dark indie pop, utilizing a piano and minimal instrumentation to convey a stark mood on his debut LP, Learning. Pretty, fragile melodies emerge, and Hadreas sounds like a more lovelorn Daniel Johnston. Equally impressive, Sebastian Blanck is a very talented New Yorker whose beautiful album of folk songs, Alibi Coast, features vocal contributions from Becky Stark, Lia Ices and more. It's a heartbreaker in the mold of the older artists who crop up on Wes Anderson soundtracks.
