What a difference a drummer makes! Not that you'll find one on hand tonight when singer Rebecca Martin celebrates the release of When I Was Long Ago, new from the Sunnyside label. Not that she was especially prolix before, but Martin cites her recent work with idiosyncratic master drummer Paul Motian as having inspired the bold, airy spaciousness of her new CD, on which she applies her warm, sandy voice to standards in a trio with bassist Larry Grenadier and tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry.
