Signed to Sub Pop, the Seattle indie-rock label most famous for hosting Nirvana and effectively kick-starting the grunge boom, Shabazz Palaces is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Tendai Maraire and rapper Ishmael Butler, formerly of the ’90s jazz-rap group Digable Planets. Its debut, Black Up, was one of 2011's most engrossing albums, its sonic uniqueness rooted in the lush, spacey futurism of Flying Lotus, Bonobo and the Bug. Tonight you can catch 'em on tour with labelmates THEESatisfaction (whose Catherine Harris-White and Stasia Irons appeared on Black Up), who have launched a clothing line, Black Weirdo Apparel, on Etsy.
