Beyond the glorious rumble of the impish punk heard on their outstanding self-titled debut from 2009, Chicago’s Smith Westerns have made plenty of noise. Yet even after the band was thrown out of multiple venues for underage drinking and other defiant acts of youthful exuberance, audiences couldn’t resist its knack for melody and keen retro groove, a garage-rock thunderstorm rife with nods to T. Rex and other psych and glam touch points. Now on Fat Possum’s roster, Smith Westerns return with Dye It Blonde, a more polished affair that finds the precocious quartet pumping even more oomph into its relentless hooks, further emphasizing its deliriously raucous riffs and refining the haze that surrounded Cullen Omori’s vocals on the debut.
