The quantity and caliber of the musicians on hand here should tell you something about just how vital Stephanie Stone—a pianist and tireless booster of the local jazz avant-garde, who died earlier this year at the age of 93—was to the downtown music scene. (John Zorn's LES venue, the Stone, was named in tribute to Stephanie and her late husband, Irving.) The cast is too numerous to run down in full, but here are a handful of names: Shelley Hirsch, Tim Berne, Marc Ribot, Sylvie Courvoisier, Mark Feldman, Dave Douglas, Matthew Shipp, Joe McPhee, Mary Halvorson, William and Patricia Parker, and Ellery Eskelin. Essential.
