Not to downplay even slightly the amazing work that local label Pi Recordings has done on behalf of deserving veterans such as Muhal Richard Abrams and Henry Threadgill and worthy upstarts like Steve Lehman. But you could argue that the label's recent advocacy for Steve Coleman, a seminal alto saxophonist, bandleader and conceptualist whose recognition has long flagged too far behind his achievement, is among Pi's finest labors. His Stone appearances are part of a two-week stretch curated by the label.
