George Bernard Shaw, whose play Arms and the Man inspired the libretto, called it “a putrid opéra bouffe in the worst taste of 1860,” but Oscar Straus’s 1908 operetta went on to become an international sensation, and the English version was the biggest hit on Broadway in 1909. The charming tale of love, war and deceptive appearances is brought back to life by Liederkranz Opera Theatre.
