Practically no other band in jazz history managed to walk the tightrope between blues feeling and classical elegance as well as the Modern Jazz Quartet, which left behind a few dozen fine records (including two on the Beatles' Apple imprint) and a durable legacy when it disbanded for good in the early ’90s. You pretty much couldn't imagine a finer lineup to take on the MJQ's canon than vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash; if you need further incentive to attend, note that veteran guitarist Jim Hall will be on hand as a special guest.
