Complexity and quirk were the chief characteristics that set English progressive-rock band Gentle Giant apart from the hairy pack during its early-’70s heyday. Since disbanding in 1980, the group has never reunited in full. But Three Friends brings together two key Giants—founding guitarist Gary Green and drummer Malcolm Mortimore (who joined Gentle Giant just in time for the 1972 album Three Friends, naturally)—in a new sextet that does the original band’s legacy proud, while forging ahead with new material in mind.
