Time Out says
The marriage between alto saxophone and either trumpet or cornet has long been a cornerstone of small-group jazz. One particularly potent partnership is rarely discussed: that of the late altoist Julius Hemphill and trumpeter Baikida Carroll. Tonight at 10pm, Carroll will colead a quartet with agile alto man Tim Berne, a onetime Hemphill apprentice. Berne and Carroll’s “Wuartet,” as they’re calling it, is an update on Faux Faux, a mid-2000s foursome; the Wuartet will be anchored by bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Ches Smith. Pianist Angelica Sanchez and bassist Mark Helias kick things off with an 8pm duo.
