Last year, John Zorn's 60th-birthday festivities spread throughout the city; now his contemporary—and another saxist-composer who's made an indelible mark on the sound of NYC jazz during the past three decades—sets up camp at Zorn's LES sound lab to celebrate his own six-decade milestone. From Oct 7 through 9, you'll hear from Berne's current working band, Snakeoil, in its original acoustic configuration at 8pm and its electric variant (with guitarist Ryan Ferreira) at 10pm. The Oct 10 bill features Ice Station Zebra, with guitarist David Torn, pianist Matt Mitchell, and drummers Tyshawn Sorey and Ches Smith. The residency closes Oct 11 and 12 with the bands Decay and Cornered (at 8 and 10pm, respectively), which mix and match personnel from the above groups with bassist and longtime Berne collaborator Michael Formanek.
