Snakeoil, a quartet with clarinetist Oscar Noriega, pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Ches Smith, is the latest in a series of state-of-the-art working bands that local saxist-composer Tim Berne has led during his prolific three-decade-plus career. The group welcomes guest guitarist Ryan Ferreira at a celebration for You've Been Watching Me, a new ECM set that handsomely showcases Snakeoil's signature blend of chamber-style abstraction and driving prog-jazz complexity.
