Toro Y Moi is essentially one dude from South Carolina, whose real name is the equally impressive Chazwick Bundick. Toro’s ’80s-flavored synth-pop once sounded like it was coming from a ghetto blaster submerged in a murky lake (a good thing). Though Bundick’s upgraded his production values a bit—see the recent Underneath the Pine—the pleasantly dreamy vibe remains. If Cat Power, Feist and Regina Spektor are indie rock’s Jane Eyres, Braids' Raphaelle Standell-Preston is the insane Mrs. Rochester, trying to sing her way out of the attic.
