Valery Ponomarev Big Band

Late drum legend Art Blakey found Valery Ponomarev in the trumpeter's native Russia, and quickly made him a Jazz Messenger; ever since, the recruit has dedicated himself to spreading the hardbop gospel. Tonight Ponomarev heads up a large ensemble as part of a program that also features Trumpeter from Russia, a documentary that tells his unlikely story.
