The YJs have always been a hard quartet to dismiss, even if smoothed-out improvs aren’t your idea of great jazz; one minute, they’re chewing on something innocuous, and the next, saxist Bob Mintzer or keyboardist Russell Ferrante reminds you that the members came up playing bop. Currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, the band is touring without bassist Jimmy Haslip, whose role is filled temporarily by Felix Pastorius (son of you bloody well know who).
