A holiday miracle has arrived early for Greenpoint—and it's one that doesn’t require boarding a shuttle bus. The MTA has scrapped three planned December weekend shutdowns of the G train after crews finished a major round of tunnel repairs ahead of schedule.
The cancellations follow months of pushback from North Brooklyn business owners, residents and elected officials worried about losing customers during the holiday shopping season. For a neighborhood served by just one subway line, keeping the G running is a pretty significant stocking stuffer.
According to amNewYork, the December closures were intended to accommodate additional repairs in the tunnel between Greenpoint and Long Island City, which sustained damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The MTA says crews completed more than 6,400 feet of grouting and leak mitigation in the Greenpoint tube beneath Newtown Creek, allowing the agency to remove those outages.
A Shop Small Greenpoint survey of 36 local businesses found an average 22 percent decline in weekend sales during four shutdown periods between July 2025 and June 2026. Thirty-nine percent reported cutting employee shifts or hours. Perri Salka, WonderMart’s owner and a co-founder of the group, said December holiday shopping accounts for a quarter of her store’s annual revenue.
“Reversing these shutdown dates means our shop owners can count on a full, uninterrupted holiday season this year,” Salka said in a statement.
Before you declare your transit troubles over, though, October still has some scheduling gymnastics in store: on October 16–19 and October 23–26, G service will be suspended between Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets and Church Avenue. Trains will run in two sections: Court Square to Bedford–Nostrand Avenues and Bedford–Nostrand to Hoyt–Schermerhorn, with service on the latter section every 20 minutes.
Both disruptions begin at 9:30pm on Friday. The first ends at 5am Monday, October 19; the second lasts until 10am Monday, October 26. The MTA recommends the F for affected southern stations, although separate F changes mean several stops will have Manhattan-bound service only.
There’s also no G service between Bedford–Nostrand and Court Square from 9:45pm to 5am on weeknights between October 12–16, with free T403 shuttle buses replacing trains. The broader signal modernization project continues, alongside accessibility improvements, structural repairs and track maintenance.
For now, Greenpoint’s holiday shopping plans have one fewer obstacle. Your October itinerary, however, still needs a little homework.
