Each week, we take two New Yorkers who swear they’re totally undateable, and put our matchmaking skills to the test. Afterward, we find out what went well on their date, and what went horribly, horribly wrong.

Why they’re single:
Marco: He’s moved a lot the past few years, and he’s a bit of a snob.
Sky: She doesn’t make dating a priority, and she’s kind of picky.

Ideal date:
Marco: Getting some ice cream and going on a walk
Sky: Going for a walk or seeing a show we both like

THE DATE

First impression
Marco: “I was a little late, and she was already at the bar. The conversation went well right from the beginning. She wasn’t really my type, but she seemed fun.”
Sky: “He was very tall, and I do like a tall gentleman, so I would say he was definitely my type. He had a strong accent that I couldn’t quite place until he told me he was Italian.”

Chemistry
Marco: “Romantically, there wasn’t really anything. In general, I prefer someone who’s a bit more driven. She had a bit of a cat-lady vibe, which can be endearing, but not to me.”
Sky: “I didn’t sense any flirting, but maybe he’s the type of person that you have to get to know better. He brought up pretty serious issues—like religion—for a first date.”

Awkward Moment
Marco: “She doesn’t eat pork. We got some baked beans that she thought might have pork in them, but she didn’t want to ask the server for some reason. So, they just sat there.”
Sky: “He thought I was fainting because, [when] I jokingly said, ‘Knock on wood,’ I leaned over to knock on the wall. Apparently, in Italy, they say ‘Knock on iron’ instead.”

Afterward
Marco: “We stayed there for more than two hours and then walked to the train station. We said goodnight, she gave me her number, and we had a friendly hug goodbye.”
Sky: “After dinner, he was more relaxed and conversational. It ended on a positive note, and there seemed to be a hint that he’d like to do something again sometime.”

Verdict
Marco: ♥♥♥ “It was fun to talk about books and movies, and she’s funny. I would like to see her again as a friend. Overall, there just wasn’t a spark or a click.”
Sky: ♥♥♥ “I didn’t really feel a romantic connection, and he was a very opinionated guy. But by the end, when we were talking more normally, it was a lot better.”
