The thrill of Instagram is that it's like a box of chocolates—you never know what you’re gonna get once you begin the never-ending quest of getting rid of all those Instagram Story notifications hovering above your feed. It’s truly the most mindless form of entertainment since Vine (RIP).

But the New York Public Library is looking to make all that tapping and scrolling a bit more mindful (and educational!). The institution is rolling out a new form of Instagram content that may just be more entertaining than watching videos of influencers unboxing new outfits. In collaboration with an independent creative agency called Mother, the NYPL has launched the first of three “Insta Novels” using the app’s Instagram Stories feature.

On NYPL's stories, you'll now find full-length, beautifully designed literary works that you can read for free during your commute. Sounds lovely, especially if you left home without a book or, heaven forbid, your headphones. It all starts with a digital flip-book of Alice in Wonderland, and it's is available for your viewing pleasure right now. The second part of the book is live on Thursday, August 23. Follow @NYPL (if you aren’t already) to enjoy even more great novels to come. And you should probably follow us, too (@timeoutnewyork) while you're there.

The NYPL has been doing a lot of cool things lately like loaning out ties and handbags for job interviews. And let us not forget that being a NYC library member gets you access to more than 30 cultural attractions through the new Culture Pass initiative.

Read on, New York!
