Time Out says

In a part of Midtown East better known for quick lunches and business dinners, Ánimo! stands out by doing something refreshingly simple: cooking from scratch. This all-day Mexican restaurant is built around one honest idea—real food, made the right way, with no shortcuts. From housemade pan dulce in the morning to slow-simmered mole poblano at night, Ánimo! isn’t interested in “reimagining” anything. It’s here to honor the real thing.

The menu moves across Mexico’s diverse culinary landscape with purpose. Each dish is rooted in its regional tradition—no mashups, no trend-chasing. You’ll find huachinango a la veracruzana (red snapper in a tomato, olive and caper sauce straight from Veracruz), tacos gobernador from Sinaloa with shrimp and melted cheese, and deeply flavorful chiles rellenos that don’t apologize for being rich, satisfying and true to form. Breakfast is no afterthought, either—chilaquiles, molletes and other staples hold their own with serious flavor and no frills.

The space itself feels calm and confident, more thoughtful than flashy. It’s the kind of restaurant that’s easy to settle into, whether you’re grabbing coffee and pastry in the morning, sliding into a booth for lunch or unwinding with friends over dinner and mezcal. There’s no showboating here—just strong technique, a respect for tradition and a serious commitment to Mexican hospitality.

And yes, the service lives up to the name. Ánimo is a Spanish word that roughly translates to “spirit” or “encouragement,” and you’ll feel both from the moment you walk in. The team behind Ánimo! wants you to eat well, feel welcome and maybe even slow down long enough to appreciate what thoughtful, regionally grounded cooking can actually taste like.

3 reasons why people should visit for Restaurant Week:

1. Scratch-made Mexican cooking you don’t often see in New York
Everything at Ánimo! is made in-house, from our moles and salsas to our pan dulce. Restaurant Week is a great entry point to experience regional Mexican dishes prepared the way they’re meant to be, deeply rooted, balanced, and intentional.

2. A chance to experience Ánimo!’s next chapter
Restaurant Week marks our return after a short closure for expansion. Guests will be among the first to experience our newly expanded space, designed to better reflect the warmth, craft, and hospitality that define Ánimo!.

3. Real value, rooted in care and craft
Restaurant Week at Ánimo! is about meaningful value, not shortcuts. The menu reflects the way we cook every day: generous, thoughtful, and deeply intentional. It’s an opportunity to experience food that takes time, technique, and respect for tradition, all in a way that feels welcoming and complete.
