What happens when you mix a pricing analyst and Indonesian fashion designer together? You get Bali Kitchen. This stylish East Village eatery was opened in 2017 by couple David Prettyman and Jazz Pasay and has since become an integral part of the downtown scene. Decked out with traditional Indonesian wall-pieces, this stop-and-go spot is the perfect place for grabbing a dish full of flavor, but also safe enough for a newbie. If you have time to sit, make sure to check out the colorful traditional Bali wall-designs and the mathematical ordered menu boards. We think that’s where the rush-hour analyst comes in.

If you’re into something light, check out the vegan Sate Lilit ($6.95). This foxy little Balienese style satay is partnered with shredded coconut and a fresh pickle. We suggest getting the house specials for a heavier meal since they’re packaged with different sides and options. One house special we consumed happily was the Nasi Campur Bali ($14.95). This mouthwatering dish was made with sate lilit, chicken, lawar, tempeh, egg, peanuts and a tempeh cracker. Served with sambal matah and jasmine rice, the best part about this dish was the mixture of jasmine rice and chicken. This combo creates the perfect balance between the familiar and the unknown, never teetering on either spectrum.

If you’re craving more, try the Rendang Sapi ($13.95). A traditional spicy meat dish from the ethnic group of Minangkabau, Bali Kitchen modernizes it with sides like lemon grass, veggies, chili and jasmine rice. Hitting the unknown side of the familiarity spectrum, this dish is perfect if you’re looking for an adventure. Cool yourself down with an Iced Cendol ($6.00), a Pandan rice jelly drink typically served for dessert. Escape the lunchtime dread and check out Bali Kitchen. You’ll eat something new without breaking the bank.
