Time Out says
Ice-cream truckers Doug Quint and Bryan Petroff will soon offer their quirky soft-serve creations in a small East Village shop. Decorating their first brick-and-mortar endeavor is a giant unicorn mural bedazzled with 6,000 Swarovski crystals. The pair will pad their menu with sweet treats from flea-market friends: La Newyorkina (ice pops), Melt Bakery (ice cream sandwiches) and Danny Macaroons.

Come for the salty pimp but be prepared to wait in a short line. This is definitely a NYC summer favorite!
I honestly did not think soft serve ice cream could taste this good. Even the plain vanilla has so much more flavor than typical soft serve. I tried the Salty Pimp—a vanilla cone drizzled with salted caramel syrup and dipped in chocolate—and it was incredible.
I don't like ice cream unless it's in a cone, and this place does cones right. I love how elaborate everything is and the unusual flavor pairings they've come up with. I always say I'll try something different but find it impossible to veer from my usual Salty Pimp. Who can resist a combo of sweet and savory? Surely, not I.
I was walking in the West Village on a Thursday night and noticed a line wrapping around the corner for what I assumed was a club, but no, it was for ice cream...Big Gay Ice Cream. I thought I'd give it a go so headed to the shop around my apartment in the East Village which had a much more reasonable line. I tried the Salty Pimp (dulce de leche, salt, nuts and ice cream), tasty, but I would say your average soft serve with yummy toppings. Don't get me wrong I'll definitely be back because I am an ice cream fiend, but there are many other good dessert spots in the hood to try out as well.
Ah, Big Gay. What a fun whimsical place to go to for some soft serve with a twist. My go to cone has always been to Bea Arthur, but when I'm feeling adventurous or think I have a bigger appetite, I will get one of their sundaes. Beware, they are very very filling.
If you think you are walking into this place for a simple soft serve then you have definitely gone to the wrong place. From unicorn paintings on the wall to the highly energetic staff, this place kicks having an ice-cream into overdrive. Its experimental, its funky but its also yummy. I had the American Globs and by the end I needed to sit down...it's ALOT of ice-cream but heck who doesn't like value for money? So stop by, enjoy it, you will definitely have a story to tell afterwards.
Come here hungry and ready to indulge in the heavy, super sweet soft serve. It's definitely worth it to get one of the signature cones, like the Bea Arthur, which is lined with dulce de leche and coated in wafer crumbs, or the Salty Pimp, which is also lined with dulce de leche and is dipped in chocolate shell. Even if you don't go with a signature, you can't really go wrong here.
With two locations in Manhattan, Big Gay Ice Cream Shop is the emperor of soft serve ice cream in NYC. Wickedly inventive sundaes and cone specials. The Monday Sundae (twist ice cream, nutella lined cone, dulce de leche, sea salt, whipped cream) and the Mermaid (vanilla ice cream, key lime curd, crushed graham crackers, whipped cream) are must haves.
Friendly service and clean eating area to boot.
I absolutely love this place! During the summer the line can get quite long, but it is definitely worth the wait. My favorite ice cream is their salty pimp - vanilla ice cream that's injected with dulce de leche and dipped in chocolate!
It's cute and colorful and fun but I don't really like their ice cream. It's way too sweet for its own good. I would recommend their Popsicles instead! They are fruity and refreshing. Perfect for a hot summer day.
