This modestly named coffeehouse sits just off a bleak strip of 99-cent and other bargain stores, and its European charm is a welcome contrast. Patrons dart in and out of the slim spot for espressos and iced lattes; others, apparently unencumbered by day jobs, linger at one of the few narrow tables to chat or read a newspaper from the rack up front. If you want fresh pastries, show up early in the day.

There’s barely room to swing a Parisien chat in this café but La Colombe serves up a mighty fine brew. Very modest but charming in its own way. Most regulars grab and go. Limited seating in the shape of a side-bench rather than tables – occupied by solo locals with macbooks and the odd would-be poet.
