If you’re lucky enough to live or work near this legendary Red Hook sandwich shop, you know the secret of its success: massive, old-school Italian heros. Buns are layered with ingredients like ham, provolone, salami, roast beef, mozzarella and fried eggplant. In the Gramercy location, prepared dinners (macaroni with vodka sauce, chicken parmigiana) in microwaveable containers are available to go.

I'm not sure what I could say that hasn't already been said about Defonte's. This place is so sweetly classic old school Brooklyn with the greatest people behind the counter making the most delicious Italian sandwiches that are actually WAY bigger than your head (but somehow you can still eat the whole thing in one sitting). Just make sure to always get the hot salad on whatever combination of meat and fried stuff you put on your sandwich. I just really really wish they were open on Sundays! Sunday is the day I need Defonte's the most.
