Don’t judge Fushimi by its location in a tiny strip mall in Todt Hill. Walk through the front door, and you’ll see a pretty mah-jongg- and domino-tiled foyer, a wall of shiny river stones trickling with water, and sinewy servers who hand you a warm towel the moment you sit down. The sushi and sashimi here rival some of the more lauded spots in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Special rolls, like the Richmond Roll—peppery bigeye tuna and avocado swathed in spicy, crunchy tuna and topped with thin pieces of shiitake mushroom—are divine. Don’t miss the lightly fried and breaded Kumamoto oysters nestled in a nicely contrasting and yuzu mango sauce.
