Under pressed-tin ceilings, neighborhood locavores dine on rustic American fare at this Brooklyn Heights spot, opened in 2009. Chef Lauren Gufgus sends out hearty plates made with seasonal ingredients, including meat loaf and mashed carrots, chicken legs with sugar snap peas and black-garlic jus, and a lamb burger with tomato chutney. Cap your meal with a cup of Counter Culture coffee—the restaurant got its start as a top-notch café.

This out-of-the-way spot is tucked away on a scenic Brooklyn street is the kind of place you'll want to spend an entire day with a book. Packed with charm and delicious grub (get the ricotta toast), it's a gem. (Now that Brooklyn Bridge Park is just a few blocks away, more people have discovered it, but not so many that you ever have to wait too, too long.)
