It’s hardly a trendy Spanish kitchen; the only foam you’ll find at Meson Asturias is in the beer mug. This stucco-walled taberna specializes in hearty dishes from Asturia, a rugged Iberian coastal province. Pork, veal, chicken and steak are enhanced with garlic, olives or Cabrales blue cheese, and sauces are flavored the Asturian way—with sherry or cider. Seafood classics like paella and zarzuela, a traditional fish stew, are deftly executed and come in generous portions. The staff is as engaging as the chow and they welcome Roosevelt Avenue’s old-school contingent alongside latter-day locals who discovered this cozy haunt.
