Nick & Stef’s has more in common with a wedding-banquet facility than it does with an old-school steakhouse. A disproportionate chunk of its business occurs in the two hours before an event at Madison Square Garden, upstairs. The menu has been scaled down to a handful of offerings that can be delivered quickly and efficiently. Such focus isn’t necessarily a bad thing in a steakhouse: The beef, served with competent sauces, delivers flavor and heft. The rest of the meal was less pleasing, from the fried calamari’s runny, oily batter to woefully bland creamed spinach and big-but-boring desserts, such as strawberry shortcake. Still, the dire lack of neighborhood dining options, the assured ability to get you to the game on time, and a private entrance to the Garden make up for a lot.
