The Prospect Heights coffee scene just got a lot more serious with the arrival of this café, which uses a La Marzocco espresso machine and beans from Portland, Oregon, super-roaster Stumptown. Brewed joe is only $1 and 60 electrical outlets allow locals to sit, type and—why not?—wonder.

I've been going to Sit & Wonder regularly for years. It's got the best atmosphere and culture of any cafe, bar, or restaurant that I know of in New York. The baristas are friendly and there is low turnover. It's family-owned, and the couple who owns the place ad their two kids are often to be met on the premises. The regulars are all on friendly terms with one another. It's like something out of decades past.
