The Bean is one of my favorite casual coffee shops in downtown Manhattan.  It definitely helps that it's close to both the Strand, two movie theaters, and Forbidden Planet - but the location is also great for people-watching.  If you're lucky enough to get a seat (it's usually packed and hard to stay for a while), you should order a lemon curd tart to go with your cappuccino.
