Tortaria

Tortas, taquitos and small-batch tequilas are the focus of this 65-seat Latin canteen—outfitted with hand-painted Mexican floor tiles and distressed-wood shelves—near Union Square. Find eight versions of the Mexican sandwiches, including pulled pork with Chihuahua cheese, beans and chipotle, and a panko-crusted chicken cutlet with spicy black beans, Oaxaca cheese and avocado. Drinkers can sip on small-batch tequilas, like Casa Noble or El Tesoro, and margaritas, such as one made with Espolon tequila, muddled cucumber and serrano chilies, and lime juice.

Came here recently with a friend and I ordered the "brunch deal" which contained 2 tacos, a torta, and a beer for $20 (I was a little disappointed, because they advertised 'brunch drinks' but was told only draft beers counted) which was a good deal. I got the lime fish tacos, which were delicious (homemade tortilla) and the pulled pork torta. I was very satisfied with the food and would definitely come back. I realized after I left they had elote, which I definitely would have ordered if I had known! The one thing I will say, is the restaurant is kind of confusing- they have waitresses, or you can order at the counter...we weren't really sure what to do so we ordered at the counter and sat at the bar. The mixed drinks looked delicious, will definitely grab one next time!

This is my go-to spot whenever I'm near Union Square. The margaritas are great (and there's a wide variety of them) and I'm absolutely obsessed with their smoky chipotle sauce. Definitely use the bottles that are on the table! The sandwiches are hefty (even the vegetarian options) so make sure you bring an empty stomach for your torta, chips, and guac.  You can order your meal at the window or - if you sit and flag a waiter - you can have table service. Regardless of what you pick, this is a great casual dinner spot!

After living in the neighborhood for 1.5 half years, I finally stopped by Tortaria the other night. Admittedly, the food is relatively so-so, but the atmosphere is great. You order at the register and self-seat. I had always wondered why this place was so packed, and now I know. It's the perfect place for big groups who want to catch up over shareable menu items and a wide assortment of drinks. Tip: try the shrimp tacos. They were the standout dish for me and my husband. Don't skimp the salsas/sauces as some of their food is a little dry.
