Here the food is Surinamese-Indonesian, with hints of both the Dutch colonists (in the sugar cookies and stuffed pastries) and the ever-present Chinese (with a killer black-pepper-spiked $8 lo mein called bamie). You’ll find similar influences in snacks like the peanut-sauced chicken satays and fried plantains (both $2); each dish is absolutely stellar topped with Kario’s take on sambal—one of the best Scotch bonnet chili-pepper relishes in the city.
