Time Out says
Food shoppers flock from all over town to stock up at this beloved local supermarket chain. The five NYC locations—Harlem, UWS, UES, Red Hook and Douglaston—offer the type of everyman prices you won't find at Whole Foods, but the quality is still top-notch. You'll find all the basics, plus excellent speciality departments with international cheeses, imported foods, kosher items and more. A walk-in cold room (jackets provided!) at the Harlem market is packed with meats and a decent beer selection, and there is a popular café and steakhouse on the second floor of the UWS store.

I gotta say Fairway is a pretty decent grocery store. Their prices thoughhhhhhh not so much. Or idk maybe it's just me and I'm used to brooklyn pricing. My boyfriend lives across the street from the place so it's usually our go to for groceries since it's convenient. It's also open until 1am which is awesome for some late night noshing. If you're not aware, they do have an upstairs section that I always forget is there. I'm only reminded when he suggests to go to the restaurant that's there. Yes, there is a restaurant on the top floor of a grocery store. A steakhouse in fact. I gotta say, I didn't expect much but I've had dinner twice there and it's been pretty yum yum. They have way more than just steak. I've had the mac n cheese, truffle burger, skirt steak, and brisket. All have been really good. Oh, and the lemonade too. Lemonade is awesome. And it's decently priced. I mean, fair pricing given it's the upper west side. I would like it to be a bit cheaper, but fairway, you're not too bad.
This place does have pretty much everything that you could need on a grocery shop, but the nonsensical layout of the store is hugely frustrating. The isles are stacked really tall so you cant reference where you are, items aren't grouped as you'd expect them to be, and I'm yet to find out how to get upstairs without taking the elevator. It's constantly busy in here too, expect queues. Though in fairness, they do move pretty quickly. The outdoor flower market is a nice little touch, but I find the flowers don't last very long.
