A New Yorker captures the vibe of the city on the walls

Time Out New York in association with Sonos

Cartoonist Mark Alan Stamaty has documented New York life for decades, notably in the Village Voice in the 1980s and 1990s. Want to sum up the city in a doodle? Stamaty’s your man. Here he takes his hand to SoHo, in an incredibly elaborate and detailed work that covers nearly every surface of Listening Room 6. Can you spot the airborne rock musicians? Or the precariously perched cat? You could spend hours investigating every squiggly detail. Fortunately, you don’t have to—Stamaty’s work is splashed across the bag you’ll carry out when you purchase a Sonos speaker.

Suggested listening: “Walk on the Wild Side,” Lou Reed. In a room that pays tribute to the colorful characters and spaces of New York, is there any other song you could listen to? The particular side of New York that Reed documents might be somewhat less wild than it was when he released this Bowie-produced track in 1972, but as quintessential New York listening, it doesn’t get much better than this.
