You can’t light up a stogie in Listening Room 3, or the “alpha room” as some have nicknamed it, but the temptation will be strong. Where the first Listening Room is all Scandinavian lightness, Listening Room 3 is the kind of dark-wooded, sleek, mid-century space that Don Draper would happily call his man cave. Highlights include a decorative rotary phone made with white wire and a smattering of fun books, including a copy of Stardust, The David Bowie Story. Plop yourself in the Wegner-designed three-legged chair (they make them in Denmark at Carl Hansen, and every Listening Room has one) for an old-school chill.
Suggested listening: “Mack the Knife,” Bobby Darin. A perfect tune for a man cave, sure, but the real pleasure of hearing a song like this in this Listening Room is witnessing Sonos’s speakers bring the composition to life. Darin’s voice floats above wonderfully full horns and snappy percussion. Play with the room’s settings to hear the song isolated in different areas.
