Don’t be surprised if you see Julie Haus herself at her women’s line’s first-ever boutique: The designer and founder presides over the shop several days a week, often pitching in on spur-of-the-moment shopper styling. She’s there along with Jason Alkire, her co-owner and husband of 12 years, who paints, draws and photographs textile prints for the label’s fabrics. Ecru-colored walls and artwork from the couple’s own collection (including some of Alkire’s photography) lend the space an intimate feel, complementing a feminine yet quirky line that combines unexpected elements and textures in items such as softly draped asymmetrical shifts with ribbon-and-leather shoulder straps ($410) and wool-and-cashmere trenches trimmed with coyote-fur collars ($815). Haus also offers some made-to-order pieces, like a blazer with rabbit-fur sleeves and pewter hardware ($1,050) and a helmet with porcupine quills ($315). Pair these outré pieces with more affordable basics, such as rayon turtlenecks ($88) and leggings ($145) from her everyday J/J diffusion line, which features sustainable fabrics like organic cotton and remainders of cashmere, wool and silk. Haus also carries the work of indie designers, including hats from Parsons millinery grad Gigi Burris ($200–$500) and jewelry from designer Christine Ettelson ($100–$400).
