Shelsky's Smoked Fish

Brooklynites can skip the schlep to Manhattan for top-notch appetizing treats, thanks to Wallse alum Peter Shelsky, who channeled childhood trips to the Lower East Side to create his throwback Jewish delicatessen. Bagels from Kossar's Bialys, Guss' Pickles and Dr Brown sodas share shelf space here, but the real draw is the primo smoked fish. Traditional salmon varieties are sourced from local purveyors, like Greenpoint's Acme and Westchester's Smokehouse. And pickled herring, cured gravlax and whitefish salad, all made in house, round out the deli delights. Get yours plain, on a bagel or in one of the chefly sandwich creations, like the heart-stopping Dr. Goldstein Special, which features chopped liver and apple horseradish sauce between two schmaltz-fried potato latkes.

If you're a lox-hater, don't bother reading this review, but if you're a New Yorker who loves their smoked fish, visit Shelsky's.

I finally made my way there this past weekend and I was pleasantly surprised. The menu consisted of way more than any average Jewish deli and some bagel spots. We ordered one "Member of the Tribe" and one "Great Gatsby" and they were pretty damn perfect. Definitely two of the better lox sandwiches I've had in a while and I'm looking forward to trying more.

I'll also say that the owner was working the register with his daughter and knew so many of his customers by name or face, which made me love Shelsky's all the more.
